Historical Background of Castiglione della Pescaia

The village is renowned for its marvelous castle dating from the tenth and eleventh century that overlooks the sea on the Maremma coas - and for the former lake “Prile” reclaimed by the Lorena. History has also left behind precious traces with the Etruscan necropolis of Vetulonia and finds from Roman time in the areas of Paduline and Castiglione della Pescaia. The Maremma coast and hinterland has found human traces dating from the Paleolithic era. There are still ruins from Roman settlements on the island of “Clodia”, mentioned by Cicerone, which stood in the middle of the ancient lake “Prile”. The fortification of the high village dates from the Pisan domination, between X and XII century, but Castiglione had other owners such as the Aragonesi and the Medici (for them it held a strategic role). The Lorena performed great works of reclamation, for example the “Casa Rossa” or “Casa Ximenes” (named by its creator) - well known for marsh recovery that also encouraged fishing. The vitality of the area increased the value of the attractions on the coast and its tourism success. The town became one of the most important destinations for tourists from North-Europe. Today, the entire wetland remains a marsh where the nature reserve “Diaccia Botrona” belongs – a humid area that represents an environmental heritage thanks to its high biological productivity.
